From Friendster to facebook… and all sorts of social platforms has become tremendous influence on our lives today. We seem to have overwhelming access to so many folks around us, that we tend to forget who among them genuinely care about you. 2 years ago,’ can’t remember when it started- I decided to hide my birthday on facebook and after that I learned some valuable lessons.
- Those who care will remember your birthday without notification.
I used to have loads of messages on my feeds for birthday greetings. This year, my phone was relatively silent. I really don’t mind, after all people who truly cares called or alternatively send messages, so my phone is still kinda busy. I appreciate all the time they had spent without them having to read it on FB to remember. I was able strengthen connections with my Family/friends who are currently in my life, which made my day more special.
- Living the real vibe of life
Birthday wishes on FB walls will only spark happiness maybe for few hours. Now, I found it less exciting, Maybe it’s because of my age? Haha.. My day was full of fulfilling interactions with people and less social media instead.
- What matters most!
When you disconnect, you look differently to life. When I removed it, I was able to place value on myself based on the things that really matter. My Husband & Family.
- Genuine happiness.
When your Facebook notification is off, you wind up having a lot less activity on your social media. Because of this you spend less time stuck on your phone and computer and manage to go out and do things you actually like. When I had my birthday notification on, I would spend hours replying back and I would miss out on things I wanted to do. Birthdays supposed to be fun anyways!!
Luckily our Organization supports our employee by giving Birthday Off. Recently, I only raised my exceptions days before my actual big day, it’s because I don’t want to make a big fuzz out of it lol. We have this tool that we use online to file our plan holiday, and that is if you still have credits left or unused leave balance on your profile. But either way if it’s your special day! The Company still gives this time-off as part of our company benefits.
You might wonder how I remember all my family’s birthday and friend’s big day. Luckily almost all my close friends and family has similar birthdays – sounds weird huh? Like my sister and my bff has same birthdays. My nephews have only a week gap. Husband shares the same month with my other girlfriend and etc. Those tricks that I made to remember everyone’s big day.
have you tried hiding your Birthday notifications on FB?
I Almost sent you a real birthday card but thankfully my internet connection came back

I still have my birthday on facebook but I really like this idea. I have my notifications turned off on facebook so I cannot see them unless I actually log in. This has improved my life in so many ways I can hardly begin to describe. Thanks for this thoughtful post. I think it is well worth considering our relationships to social media. Take care!

Yes, by creating limits from social media and investing more to human connection instead.
Thank you for your sweet words!
