How long do you plan to live?

Hmm…

Honestly, I haven’t thought about this, or have you?  If you ask me anything about aging, I’ll say that I want to live a long, happy and healthy life. Of course, common norms are balance diet, activities such as exercising and harmonious relationship towards others. But what else can you include for you to say that you are living the best of your life?

No matter where you from or what your aiming for is – It is likely our ultimate wish is to be successful not just having wealth and money. It is mere saying that we are following our passion, living purposefully, and enjoying the present life.

Technically speaking, Life expectancy nowadays has been stretched to a massive jump because of new discoveries and interventions: everything to new GYM equipment which focus on certain areas to improve on, anti-biotics to cancer drugs – even herbal medicine is now stepping up their game. Who would have thought that Vitamin deficiency will be available on injectables nowadays? We are now being educated on how to improve our lifestyles in various ways. Following all of these, how many years might be added to life? For me, this would allow us to accomplish more in life and try new things and see my future kids grow.

“It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly.” – Albert Einstein

So, from what ever reasons it is, this seems like a good time to ask a very basic question: how long do you plan to live?

Most of the responses I got provided 2 possible answers:

  • On their 60’s (mostly millennial’s) doesn’t want to be a burden and doesn’t want to be taken care of. How this generation will grow old differently? Perhaps let’s talk about entitlement costs, dependency ratios and the challenges of disease and financial insecurity.
  • On their 80’s – (My choice) enough time to see their kids grow and meet their grandchildren. Settle in a farm or countryside and have a peaceful retirement which involves hobbies that generate decent income.

Despite the challenges, I’m keeping the faith of living the moment and living the life. There are a lot of ways to develop new approach enable successful aging. It’s about taking all the setbacks as opportunities to grow for later life transition. It’s about how you appreciate your present circumstances today compared to your old self 10 years back.

Reality check, my best advise is to live for the best but prepare for the worst. I think this kind of evaluation will be helpful for you to reflect and determine what adjustments might be required for you to meet whether it’s financial, family issues, career goals, and spiritual. I started pursuing my passion in writing last year, since then I’ve been living my day to the fullest, filled with joy and gratitude.

“Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of another people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” – Steve Jobs

In Brazil we say that we can not let the disert to the end, we need to eat it now, because live is short. But you are completely right, it is not just a question of time to leave, but an intensity, an full experience mode on to life.

    • Rhea

Agree, very well said. it is how you purposefully manage your time

I think that when it is about the time, I am like “Oasis” and “I want to live forever”. But, when we talk about the experience, I am like R.E.M. “man on the moon” type. Live as long as possible and a great life!

There is a vegan community in Israel. They are all close knit, are completely green, and think they will live forever.

My plan is to live for a long long time to be with my family. To see my kids growing, to take care of my sun until we get older and to fulfill my duties and responsible to my creator. But still, He is the one who is holding my life and He is the one to decide whether I am going to live or not.

I want to live forever. But I will settle for age 80? No one is promised tomorrow. I will just wait until Jesus calls me home.

If God wills it, I would want to live until I have peace of mind that my children are living their lives with their own families. I would want to see all the grandchildren I would ever have. And if possible, I pray that I would not fall ill for a long time. I don’t want to put a financial burden on my children. Just enough time to put my affairs in order and say my good-byes.
