Reflections from the Barbie Movie: Nostalgia, Empowerment, and Unexpected Surprises

My Thoughts:

As someone with a long history of fondness for Barbie dolls, the recent Barbie movie holds a special place in my heart. From treasuring my first Barbie doll during my preteens, despite my parents’ lack of enthusiasm for them, to experiencing the movie alongside my husband, this blog post explores my thoughts on the film and the profound life lessons it delivers.

Nostalgic Beginnings:

My childhood memories are intertwined with Barbie; I vividly recall saving my money and heading to Uniwide Mall with my aunt to purchase my first Barbie doll. It was a simple, regular Barbie that cost around 170 pesos. Watching my sister’s growing appreciation for Barbie as well further deepened my attachment to these iconic dolls.

The Movie Experience:

Although our decision to watch the film in Dubai came later than expected, the experience was anything but lackluster. America Ferrera’s portrayal as a mother with a teenage child showcased her acting prowess while numerous metaphors exploring feminism and women’s empowerment surprised and delighted me. I was amazed at how Mattel successfully connected Barbie to the real world, particularly through the use of a Birkenstock slipper as a metaphor. The diversity in Barbie’s physicality was also heartening, providing a wider and more inclusive representation of beauty.

Life Lessons and Emotional Impact:

Contrary to the notion that it’s solely a children’s movie, this film touches upon several thought-provoking themes that require viewers to read between the lines. The “Weird Barbie” character adds a unique balance to the narrative, and Margot Robbie’s role as a producer/actor shines through her successful pitches.

The emotional climax where Barbie expresses her desire to create rather than being made left me deeply moved. Watching Barbie step out of the stereotypical mold, sporting Birkenstock slippers, jeans, and a big claw clip in her hair, triggered a profound sense of empowerment. In a poignant scene, she confidently reveals that she has an appointment with a gynecologist, highlighting her strong desire to engage in creating a life. Once again, this unexpected twist reinforced the movie’s empowering message, bringing tears to my eyes.

Immediate Review:

As I write this review while strolling through Dubai Mall, I felt compelled to share my thoughts on this deserving movie without delay. Interestingly, my nine-year-old niece was named after Barbie, a testament to my sister’s deep admiration for the iconic doll.

In Closing:

In conclusion, the recent Barbie movie not only taps into the nostalgia of devoted fans but also offers empowering life lessons. Its unexpected twists and emotional moments elicit a profound emotional response from both younger viewers and adults alike.

I’m curious to know, what aspect of this movie resonated with you the most?

I can’t wait to see the film and I’m sure it will make me emotional.
