My NLP Journey

“Confidence means being Bold and Unapologetically Authentic”

(Disclaimer: becoming an ACE takes time)

Completing an NLP course is just the beginning, how to master it depends on you. Having heard and read about the influence of Nuero-Linguistic Programming (NLP) I took the leap of faith and signed up to NLP Prac to know about the principles and the neuroscience behind a human psychology. I must say it keeps my sanity solid amidst uncertainty. There are many definitions of NLP, some say it is the study of human excellence. For me it started having an attitude of curiosity, the desire to measure life skill and match it to life that is worth learning – to make the change thru outcomes that I want. NLP is not about profiling nor related to religion. It is all about the mastery of living with confidence and meaningful life using higher self-awareness methods to spot schemes, thoughts and beliefs that can be preventing us finding our inner peace. One thing I have learned, belief is subjective – we live differently, you cannot change others and mould them according to your faith and that does not make them a lesser person.

NLP explores the relationships between how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and our patterns of behaviour and emotion (programmes)

NLP was created by Richard Sandler and John Grinder in 1970’s. Back then the creators were interested in 2 things, what makes Introduction to psychotherapist special and in what way can this specialty be transferred to other people. Fast forward today, NLP has been actively revolutionising and provoking communication between humans by time-saving exercise in personal aid.

NLP is not a quick fix; however, it is easy if you have touch of curiosity, ambition and interest. It is a process you are willing to do as a journey. Becoming a master calls for time and practice.

3 lessons I have learned from a millennial’s perspective

  • The Meaning of your communication is the response you get. – The meaning of your communication is the response that you get. Communication is not about what you intend, or about saying the right words. Communication is about creating an experience in, and getting a response from, the listener. The “bottom line” is the response you elicit.
  • Map is not the territory – People respond to their map of reality, not to reality itself. By changing maps, it is possible to change people’s responses. Now when I listen to people giving instructions, I realize immediately why it will not work. Understanding people better also makes us more patient and tolerant. It also makes us reflect on our own reaction in the past.
  • NLP has taught that this very language can completely change the way you look at yourself, thereby affecting your self-image, confidence and overall take at life.
  • The art of reasoning explained it introduces the principles of critical thinking in a clear, accessible, and logical manner— by learning how to use core questions thus to bypass abstract or shallow answers.
  • There is no such thing as failure, only feedback. Every response can be utilized. “Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try.” – Michael Jordan, “Without struggle there is no progress” – Unknown

NLP is a rich field that has been built from the shared techniques and context from practitioners over time. Honestly, this course was a revelation. If you have noticed – I did not use any jargons here so it will be appropriate to any reader who might not understand NLP but wants to know about it.

The best thing about NLP is that the only requirement is practice. And “Practice Makes Permanent”.

I had not heard of NLP before. It is fascinating. Your statement, “belief is subjective – we live differently, you cannot change others and mould them according to your faith and that does not make them a lesser person.” could not be a more true statement. The same exact things give people widely different experiences in their minds.

I’ve only read about Nuero-Linguistic Programming a few times and quite frankly I’m quit intrigue. Is this similar to psychotherapy?

    • Rhea Evangelista

NLP and psychotherapy have different underlying assumptions about the human mind and its connections with the body as a whole. NLP and all forms of traditional psychology have different methodologies, different measures and different concepts in practice.Although similar NLP is based on ‘modeling’ rather than ‘theory

      Happy Learning! 🙂
